Four years after the incident, the thief in Goo Hara’s safe theft case has finally been rendered in a composite sketch.

Last month, a BBC documentary on the “Burning Sun” scandal caused a stir by exposing the sordid secrets of key suspects, many of whom are K-pop stars. Goo Hara’s story was highlighted for her crucial role in exposing the involvement of high-ranking police officials with the suspects.

Goo Hara tragically passed away on November 24th, 2019, at the age of 28. She had been pursuing a solo career and working in Japan before returning to Korea, where she was found dead in her Cheongdam-dong residence. About two months after her funeral, her personal safe went missing. Despite other valuables being untouched, the safe, which contained old cell phones, got stolen.

The police conducted a nine-month investigation but failed to apprehend the thief.

On June 15th, the SBS investigative journalism show Unanswered Questions began soliciting tips about the suspect who broke into the late singer’s home and stole the safe. In the June 22th episode, an expert speculated, “It seems someone viewed Goo Hara’s old phones as a Pandora’s box. They might have feared a significant personal fallout if the contents were revealed.”

Goo Hara’s brother, Goo Ho In, mentioned, “I had already removed all important items from the safe. When the thief took it, it was practically empty.” He added that despite Goo Hara’s room containing luxury clothes and watches, the thief made off with only the 31kg safe.

He also shared that a housekeeper later revealed that Goo Hara had written a will “just in case.” However, no will was found in the safe. All her phones were iPhones, and they have been entrusted to a reliable phone service company to unlock the passwords.

Through expert consultations, Unanswered Questions identified the suspect captured on the security camera and created a composite sketch. The suspect is described as wearing an earring in his left ear, appearing to be in his late 20s to early 30s, with a height in the high 170 cm range and a sturdy build. Former detective Chang Gil Jung noted, “He has a long chin and slightly protruding cheekbones.”

The suspect’s sketch is expected to aid in finally resolving the mystery of Goo Hara’s safe theft.
