The actors who attended the 2024 MBC Drama Awards expressed their sorrow and condolences for the victims of the Jeju Air passenger plane crash. The awards ceremony was held at the MBC Public Hall in Seoul on December 30 last year and aired on January 5th.
Han Seok Kyu, the star of Doubt, won the grand prize at the 2024 MBC Drama Awards. Due to the aftermath of the Jeju Air passenger plane crash, MBC canceled the live broadcast of the ceremony and instead aired a pre-recorded version on January 5th, after the mourning period ended.
All the attending actors wore black attire to mourn the victims. MCs Kim Sung Ju and Chae Soo Bin opened the event by expressing their condolences to the victims and their families. The actors who took the stage also paid their respects with heavy hearts.
Han Seok Kyu, who won the grand prize for his role as profiler Jang Tae Su in Doubt, said, “Like everyone here, including the audience and my fellow actors, I feel deeply saddened. I want to apologize for holding this event and ceremony during such a difficult time.” He continued, “As actors, everything we do is meant to connect with and bring something meaningful to the audience and viewers. But with such a heartbreaking tragedy unfolding, it weighs heavily on my heart.”
He added, “I always strive to find ways to convey genuine and heartfelt emotions to the audience, but today, I simply want to offer my sincerest condolences to the bereaved families enduring this unimaginable loss. The reason I chose to do Doubt was to highlight the importance of family. It’s only recently that I realized family has been the central theme of everything I’ve done in my career. Through this work, I wanted to express and share the value of family. But now, to those who have lost their loved ones, I offer my deepest sympathy and heartfelt apologies.”
Unable to continue for a moment, Han Seok Kyu added, “I hope you find the strength to overcome this tragedy. I am truly sorry,” and then left the stage.
This year’s Drama of the Year award went to Chief Inspector 1958. The Best Actor and Actress awards in the Mini-series category were awarded to Lee Hanee for Knight Flower, Lee Je Hoon for Chief Inspector 1958, and Yoo Yeon Seok for When the Phone Rings.
