Netflix’s global phenomenon Squid Game 2 has hit a sensitive nerve in Vietnam, with viewers calling for a boycott over dialogue referencing the Vietnam War. The controversy has escalated to the point where Vietnamese authorities are now monitoring the situation.

According to Lao Dong News, a specific scene in the series has triggered significant viewer backlash over its historical implications.

The controversial exchange occurs during a rest period between games when Dae Ho (Kang Ha Neul) mentions, “I’m the son of a prestigious family, so my mom only let me play inside with my sisters.” Jung Bae (Lee Seo Hwan) responds, “And they let you join the Marines?”

Dae Ho then replies, “My father sent me to make me more manly. He was a Vietnam War veteran,” to which Jung Bae admiringly responds, “Your father must have been a great man.” This characterization has particularly struck a chord with Vietnamese viewers, who view the Korean military’s involvement in their civil war as foreign intervention rather than something worthy of admiration.

“This clip has been rapidly shared across social media, leading many viewers to demand a boycott of the show and request Netflix Vietnam to re-examine the content. Some have even called for the series to be removed entirely from the Vietnamese region,” Lao Dong News reported.

The controversy has caught the attention of Vietnamese authorities. A representative from Vietnam’s Film Department stated, “We are currently reviewing and evaluating whether ‘Squid Game 2’ violates our film laws,” adding that “We will handle this according to our laws.”
