FT Island’s Lee Hong Ki is facing backlash after publicly defending his bandmate Choi Min Hwan, currently embroiled in solicitation allegations.

The controversy began on October 24th when Yulhee, Choi Min Hwan’s ex-wife and former LABOUM member, uploaded a video to her YouTube channel, sharing audio recordings of Choi Min Hwan. The recordings allegedly contain conversations with an adult entertainment venue employee, including terms like “hostess” and “motel,” sparking accusations of solicitation.

After the video release, Choi Min Hwan issued a statement through FNC Entertainment, saying, “I take responsibility for disappointing the public and viewers, and I intend to step back from all media activities, including the show I’m on with my kids.”

Despite this, Choi Min Hwan is expected to continue some activities with FT Island. Lee Hong Ki soon addressed the controversy on the fan community, saying, “It was between the two of them, and now it’s come to this. He should admit his mistakes and apologize.” He added, “But don’t believe everything so easily. I’ll keep going forward, even if I get hit with stones.” This sparked further backlash, as some fans interpreted his comments as a dismissal of the allegations.

One fan responded, “An investigation has already begun; what more is there to wait for? No one wants to support someone accused of frequenting adult entertainment venues.” Lee Hong Ki replied, “What if it’s not solicitation or an adult venue? Can you take responsibility for what you’re saying?”

Lee Hong Ki’s comments are understood by some as loyalty to a long-time bandmate. However, with Choi Min Hwan’s ongoing internal investigation and his own decision to step back from broadcasting, critics argue that Hong Ki’s remarks only added fuel to the fire.

In the midst of the controversy, FT Island continued with their scheduled performance for “2024 FTISLAND LIVE’ PULSE’ IN ASIA” in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Choi Min Hwan remained backstage, playing the drums out of sight. FT Island is set to proceed with additional appearances, including their “Love in Seoul” concert at Blue Square on October 24th and the “KHNP Music Festival” from November 8th in Gyeongju.

The solicitation allegations are currently in the preliminary investigation stage.
