The second episode of tvN’s Monday-Tuesday drama Serendipity’s Embrace throws Lee Hong Joo (played by Kim So Hyun) and Kang Hu Young (played by Chae Jong Hyeop) together for a date that sparks a change in their relationship.
With a little help from his uncle, Kang Hu Young manages to score a fun-filled first date with Hong Joo by asking her to be his Seoul guide. They have a perfect date at an amusement park, riding rides and taking cute pictures together.
The mood takes a turn on their way home when it starts raining. Hong Joo accidentally lowers a window while admiring the rainy cityscape, leading to a moment of awkward closeness between her and Hu Young. Back home, the lingering physical closeness and the pitter-patter of rain create a charged atmosphere. Flustered, Hong Joo can’t help but say, “I thought you were going to kiss me.”
Meanwhile, CEO Bae Hye Sook (Yoon Jung Hee) introduces Hong Joo to a writer for the company’s 10th-anniversary project, and her world flips upside down as the writer turns out to be Bang Jun Ho (played by Yoon Ji On), her first love and the one who left her three years ago. Hong Joo is cold towards him, though he romantically claims they never broke up. Just then, Hu Young swoops in and grabs Hong Joo’s hand right in front of Bang Jun Ho.
Flashback scenes reveal Hong Joo and Hu Young’s memories of their 19-year-old selves. While Hong Joo was busy trying to help her friend Kim Hye Ji (Kim Da Som) win over her crush, Hu Young was secretly smitten with Hong Joo. One night, Hu Young finds Hong Joo asleep in the library, struggling to write a book recommendation for Bang Jun Ho. He gently supports her head and finishes the recommendation for her, a small act of kindness that speaks volumes about his feelings.
The episode ends with a cryptic epilogue that leaves us wanting more. We see a tearful young Hong Joo saying, “I’m going to confess to him.” But Hu Young tells her, “Don’t confess.” This glimpse into their past and the current love triangle sets the stage for an exciting story to unfold in the coming episodes.
