YoonA attended the 77th Cannes Film Festival and faced accusations of racial discrimination from a female security guard on the red carpet.
On May 19th (local time), YoonA graced the Cannes red carpet in a pink dress, drawing the attention of international media. However, a video of a female security guard blocking YoonA as she tried to pose quickly went viral, sparking controversy.
In the video, YoonA waved to the cameras but was stopped by the security guard who used her arm to block her, causing YoonA to hastily move inside. Reports surfaced that the security guard was notably rushing stars of color from Korea, India, and African-American, leading to allegations of racism.
On May 26th, the Hindustan Times reported that the Cannes security guard faced heavy criticism for allegedly exhibiting racist behavior towards YoonA, the former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland, and Dominican actress Massiel Taveras.
The outlet stated, “Although the South Korean celeb didn’t express her anger outwardly, her facial expression looked visibly annoyed and uncomfortable.” The report also noted that the controversial security guard did not stop white actors from taking photos on the red carpet.
Kelly Rowland reportedly warned the same security guard not to touch her, and Massiel Taveras expressed her displeasure by pushing the guard’s shoulder.
