MBC’s hit Friday-Saturday drama When the Phone Rings has released behind-the-scenes photos to ease fans’ disappointment after a schedule delay last week.

The show, starring Yoo Yeon Seok, Chae Soo Bin, Heo Nam Jun, and Jang Gyu Ri, has been capturing viewers with its unique blend of compelling performances, fresh and stylish direction by Park Sang Woo, and a gripping script by Kim Ji Woon that surpasses the original webtoon.

One of the most buzzworthy aspects of the drama is the evolving relationship between Yoo Yeon Seok’s Baek Sa Eon and Chae Soo Bin’s Hong Hee Joo. Described as a couple who initially appear to be in a loveless, strategic marriage, their deep connection is gradually coming to light. Director Park Sang Woo previously highlighted this dynamic as a key feature of the series: “What might seem like a toxic marriage at first is actually a story of genuine love that has endured for over 20 years.”

In Episode 4, Hee Joo learns the truth about her husband’s feelings when Sa Eon says, “Hee Joo isn’t just an appendix; she’s an entirely new language.” His cold demeanor toward her was a shield, trying not to allow himself to feel for her. The emotional rooftop conversation between the two provided Hee Joo with comfort, but as Sa Eon approaches her while she’s holding the phone, it left viewers questioning whether her secret as the blackmailer has been exposed.

To tide fans over until the next episode, the production team released a series of behind-the-scenes photos from Episodes 1-4. The images highlight the dedication of Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin, who were often seen deep in discussion with director Park Sang Woo before shooting. Since the drama features frequent phone conversations, Yoo Yeon Seok and Chae Soo Bin took it upon themselves to assist each other during filming, even acting as the voice on the other end of the line to enhance the realism of the scenes. Their synergy was particularly evident in the climactic ending of Episode 4, where their performances brought the tension to a peak.

When the Phone Rings will return with Episode 5 on Friday, December 13th, at 9:40 PM KST, followed by Episode 6 on Saturday, December 14th, at 9:50 PM KST.
