On August 5th, Um Tae Goo sat down for an interview to discuss his experiences with the JTBC series My Sweet Mobster.
My Sweet Mobster is a romantic comedy that follows Ji Hwan (Um Tae Goo), a reformed gangster, and Eun Ha (Han Sun Hwa), who plays with children. Tackling his first rom-com, Um Tae Goo shared, “It wasn’t easy. I had to be much more energetic on set, and memorizing all the lines was challenging.” He added, “I had to do some embarrassing things, but I couldn’t afford to waste time, so I pushed through.”
With a genuine desire to do well, Um Tae Goo approached the role with sincerity. “I’ve done dark projects like ‘Save Me,’ ‘Night in Paradise,’ and ‘Hometown,’ so I wanted to try something light. When the script for ‘My Sweet Mobster’ came along, it was harmless and fun, and I wanted to bring out the cuteness I felt when I first read it,” he said.
Viewers saw a new side of Um Tae Goo in My Sweet Mobster, particularly enjoying his character’s romantic entanglements. His chemistry with Han Sun Hwa, whom he also worked with in Save Me, was praised. Reflecting on working with Han once again, he noted, “The biggest advantage was being comfortable with each other from the start. She’s an amazing actress, and our chemistry was great.”
He further complimented Han Sun Hwa, saying, “She has incredible focus and quick thinking. While I often struggle and need multiple takes, she usually nails it in one or two. It’s impressive.”
Discussing a particularly nerve-wracking aspect of his role, Um Tae Goo mentioned, “I was really nervous about the kiss scenes. I couldn’t show it because it might make my co-star nervous too, but it was definitely awkward.”
He then expresses his desire to explore deeper into a romance genre, “I’m not confident, but I’d like to try another rom-com. I’m open to anything, but since I’ve done a rom-com, I’d love to do a melodrama next. ‘Christmas in August’ came to mind first. I want to try a gentle love story.”
