South Korean auteur Yeon Sang Ho is taking his talents to Hollywood.
The director, known for his acclaimed zombie thriller Train To Busan, has signed on to write and direct 35th Street for TriStar Pictures. Joining him on the script will be frequent collaborator Ryu Yong Jae.
This action-horror film marks Yeon’s first foray into English-language filmmaking. Plot details remain shrouded in mystery, but fans can expect a thrilling ride based on Yeon’s past successes.
Yeon’s meteoric rise began in 2016 with Train To Busan. This modest $8 million film became a global phenomenon, grossing over $98 million worldwide and establishing Yeon as a master of the genre. The film’s success spawned a beloved sequel, Peninsula, released in 2020.
Peninsula wasn’t Yeon’s only recent success. He also directed the Netflix series Hellbound, which topped the platform’s global charts. Additionally, Yeon helmed the Netflix film Jung-E, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile storyteller.
Partnering with Yeon on this project is TriStar Pictures, a studio with a rich history. Appian Way, founded by Leonardo DiCaprio, and Seoul-based production company WOW POINT will also co-produce the film. WOW POINT boasts a strong track record of international content creation, with hits like the Korean mystery thriller The Bequeathed and the Netflix adaptation of Parasyte: The Grey under their belt.
Yeon is represented by UTA and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole, LLP. With a talented team behind him and his proven ability to captivate audiences, 35th Street is poised to be a major Hollywood debut for Yeon Sang Ho.
