In the fourth episode broadcast on the 25th, the relationship between Choi Seung-hyo (Jung Hae-in) and Bae Seok-ryu (Jung So-min) evolved, and their past history was revealed. Towards the end of the episode, Bae Seok-ryu, excited to learn about a project that Choi Seung-hyo had gotten by surprise, hugged him. Choi Seung-hyo, surprised and tense, reflected on their past and realized his feelings for Bae Seok-ryu.
Initially touted as a “highly anticipated” series for the second half of the year by tvN and Netflix, “Love Next Door” received mixed reactions from viewers and failed to meet expectations until its fourth episode. Specifically, the third episode recorded a low audience rating of 4,3%, leading to criticism that the series did not live up to its potential despite its first-run time slot.
Viewers who followed the series until the third episode expressed disappointment with what they saw as outdated settings, forced dialogue, and predictable plots. There were also complaints about the repetitive conflicts and reconciliations between the protagonists, Bae Seok-ryu and Choi Seung-hyo, which led to viewer fatigue. The forced dialogue resulted in awkward performances from the actors, adding to criticism of the series.
However, given that Jung Hae-in and Jung So-min are actors recognized for their skills, the development of the protagonists’ relationship in the fourth episode has revived the appeal of the series. The chemistry between supporting couple Jeong Mo-eum (Kim Ji-eun) and Kang Dan-ho (Yoon Ji-on) also adds enjoyable moments. Notably, in episode 4, Bae Seok-ryu’s active response to workplace harassment highlights the charm of the female protagonist.
Viewers who previously found the “childhood friend” interactions between Bae Seok-ryu and Choi Seung-hyo awkward are now reacting positively to their growing romantic chemistry. It remains to be seen whether the romance between the two will continue to receive praise as the series progresses. In short, although “Love Next Door” is a series full of clichés, it is known for being light, comfortable and pleasant to watch.
Do you think this series will manage to maintain its appeal over time?
