Viewers of the period drama The Tale of Lady Ok are expressing shock following a surprising character revelation in the latest episode.

The fourth episode of JTBC’s weekend drama The Tale of Lady Ok, which aired on December 15th, featured Sung Yun Gyeom (Choo Young Woo) facing potential arrest as a rebel.

In a pivotal scene, Sung Yun Gyeom revealed to Ok Tae Young (Lim Ji Yeon), “If you’re worried I might reveal your secret, I’ll share one of mine that must never be known. I, too, did not want this marriage. I cannot be with a woman. If this secret were revealed, I, too, would face death. Please forgive me for not being honest.”

The episode revealed that Sung Yun Gyeom had been protecting children in similar situations under the name “Aesimdan.” When the group was accused of being rebels conducting military training, Sung Yun Gyeom showed his father Sung Gyu Jin (Sung Dong Il) a mark branded on his shoulder. Even when Ok Tae Young defended him, saying, “My husband was only helping children who were different,” Sung Gyu Jin confronted his son, demanding, “Why did you do this for just a few children?”

Sung Gyu Jin concluded with an angry ultimatum: “Leave this place now. If you ever appear before me again, you’ll die as a rebel by my own hands. So never return here. My son.” The episode concluded with Sung Yun Gyeom losing his official position for overlooking rebellion and becoming estranged from his father.

The development has sparked considerable viewer reaction, with many expressing surprise at the sudden introduction of this storyline. Viewers have commented online: “Aren’t they using LGBTQ+ themes too casually?”, “This came out of nowhere,” “Then why did he propose marriage? Wasn’t he in love?”, “Perhaps he thought if he had to marry by royal decree anyway, he’d prefer a woman who seemed intelligent?”

As viewers process this unexpected plot development, anticipation builds for how this storyline will unfold in future episodes.
