Just three days after its release, Netflix’s suspense thriller The Frog has soared to the top of the Korean Netflix charts and secured the fourth spot in Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English Series category.
Premiered on August 23rd, The Frog has quickly captured viewers’ attention with its gripping story of ordinary lives turned upside down by a mysterious summer visitor. The series recorded over 2,000,000 views, earning its place in the global Top 10 Non-English Series. Beyond ranking No. 1 in Korea, The Frog has entered the Top 10 list in 16 countries, including India, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Qatar, and the UAE, proving its international appeal.
International media have also lauded the series. Forbes described it as “spinning its own intricate web of interconnected narratives, relying on unique plot devices and masterful use of lighting, colors, and music to set the mood for each scene.” NME praised the show’s “cinematic and borderline art house approach,” highlighting Son Ho Young’s captivating story that “expertly treads the line between psychological horror and a chilling killer thriller,” and director Mo Wan Il’s visual flair as “a feast for the eyes.” Pinkvilla also reviewed the series, noting, “Go Min Si and Kim Yoon Seok’s twisted tale of fate hooks viewers for the long haul.”
Korean media echoed these sentiments, with MHN Sports calling it a series that “combines the excitement and freshness of a suspense thriller with plenty of empathy and thought-provoking moments,” and Max Movie applauding the “director’s skill in maintaining tension while preserving the show’s unique tone.”
Viewers have been equally enthusiastic, with one describing the series as “an immersive eight-episode series with a powerful narrative propelled by cross-cutting plotlines,” while another praising it as “a suspense thriller that stays true to its roots.”
Moreover, Forbes highlighted the stellar performances, especially in the second half, stating, “The brilliant acting performances alone make this series worth a watch.” NME also praised the dynamic between Kim Yoon Seok and Go Min Si, saying, “Go is the unstoppable force to Kim’s immovable object. Her unhinged, electric energy is calmed by Kim’s stoic perseverance, and their constant struggle to one-up each other is the most enjoyable aspect of the show.”
