The 29th Busan International Film Festival will be holding a special program dedicated to the late actor Lee Sun Kyun.
The festival will be screening six of his representative works and hosting a special talk.
Furthermore, the late actor has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Korea Cinema Award.
The Korea Cinema Award is given to a film professional who has elevated the status of Korean cinema and contributed to its global growth. The award recognizes Lee Sun Kyun, who has been greatly loved by domestic and international film fans through his various works. The award ceremony will be held at the opening ceremony.
First, the special exhibition will showcase three early works that established Lee Sun Kyun as an outstanding film actor to the public. His performance in Paju (2009) earned him the Best Actor Award at the 2010 Las Palmas de Gran Canaria International Film Festival. His portrayal of a complex character, torn between his past as an activist and his growing feelings for his sister-in-law, was widely praised. The program will also feature Our Sunhi (2013), a critically acclaimed film by Hong Sang Soo, and A Hard Day (2014), an action-packed thriller.
My Mister, a critically acclaimed drama produced by Studio Dragon, will be screened as part of the special exhibition. The show aired in 2018 and has since become a beloved classic for many viewers. The fifth episode has been selected for screening, as it offers a particularly poignant portrayal of Lee Sun Kyun’s character, Park Dong Hoon, and his emotional journey.
Oscar winner Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite (2019) will also be screened. The film won four awards – Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film – from six nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards. Land of Happiness (2024) will also be screened. He played a rigid soldier involved in a presidential assassination in the movie.
The 29th Busan International Film Festival will run from October 2nd to 11th for ten days at the Busan Cinema Center.
