Netflix’s highly anticipated Squid Game Season 2 has been nominated for Best Television Series – Drama at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, set to take place on January 5th, 2025. This marks an extraordinary achievement as the series has yet to premiere, with its release scheduled for December 26th.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the nominations on December 9th, including Squid Game 2 among the contenders for the prestigious category. Other nominees in the Best TV Drama Series category include FX’s Shōgun, Netflix’s The Diplomat, Apple TV Plus’s Slow Horses, Prime Video’s Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Peacock’s The Day of the Jackal.
According to outlets like The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline, it’s highly unusual for a series to be nominated before its official release. The media attributed this to Netflix’s decision to break tradition by launching Squid Game 2 during the Christmas holiday season, an unconventional move as most U.S. broadcasters avoid releasing new shows at the end of the year.
While the show hasn’t aired yet, it qualified for the Golden Globes as Netflix provided the episodes to the HFPA by the November 4th submission deadline, meeting the eligibility requirements.
The 82nd Golden Globe Awards will air live on January 5th, celebrating the best in film and television.
