Netflix’s global phenomenon Squid Game has returned with its second season, generating immediate buzz and polarizing reactions from critics and audiences alike.
The highly anticipated Season 2 dropped on Netflix on December 26th at 5 PM KST, following Lee Jung Jae‘s return as Gi Hun, who re-enters the deadly competition seeking revenge, facing off against enigmatic Front Man (Lee Byung Hun) in what promises to be an intense battle of wills.
As the streaming giant’s most anticipated release, the show has sparked a divide among viewers, with some hailing it as a worthy successor while others suggest it feels more like a prelude to Season 3.
MPA-certified entertainment journalist Rama offered high praise, noting that “Squid Game season 2 was a lot crazier than the first one. It even had its own ‘The Deer Hunter’ moment that got me all on pins & needles, squeamish.” Fellow critic Aayush Sharma echoed the sentiment, declaring “Lee Jung Jae is magnificent. It’s bigger and better.”
However, Time magazine struck a more critical tone, pointing out that “It takes too long—two plodding episodes out of just seven this season—to get them there. As it stalls, the show unnecessarily reiterates Gi-hun’s broadsides against the bored billionaires for whom Squid Game is a spectator sport and burns time on characters who don’t end up being especially important.” They further observed that “Once Gi Hun is back in his green tracksuit, we meet the new players who give the season its emotional stakes, but the plot feels too much like a rehash of Season 1: play, murder, rage, repeat.”
As discussions heat up around Season 2’s reception, attention is already turning to Season 3. While the first season comprised nine episodes, the current season has been trimmed to seven. Industry sources reveal that Seasons 2 and 3 were produced simultaneously, with the third installment currently in post-production. The next chapter is slated for release in the first half of 2025, though an exact premiere date remains under wraps.
