Hwang Dong Hyuk, the creator of Netflix’s Squid Game, addressed the connections between the series’ upcoming second season and South Korea’s recent martial law declaration during the show’s production press conference on December 9th in Seoul.

“‘Squid Game 2’ connects to the absurd conflicts, divisions, and upheavals happening not just in Korea but around the world,” Hwang said. “Watching ‘Squid Game 2’ won’t feel so far removed from looking at our world today. You’ll see scenes that evoke what’s happening in reality.”

The recent martial law declaration by President Yoon Suk Yeol sparked outrage across the country, and Hwang expressed his personal anger at the situation. “I feel a heavy heart releasing ‘Squid Game 2’ during a time like this. Like many of you, I was shocked and couldn’t believe it when the martial law was announced. I stayed awake, following every moment,” he shared.

He added, “It’s infuriating as a citizen to see the entire nation lose sleep, take to the streets, and end the year in fear and despair over something so absurd. Whether through impeachment or voluntary resignation, those responsible must take accountability.”

Hwang also revealed that Squid Game 2 introduces a significant new element: voting after each game. While the first season featured only one pivotal vote, this expansion mirrors the growing divisions and conflicts among participants. “This voting system can also be connected to reality,” he explained. “Around the world, people are drawing lines, becoming divided, and even going to war. Watching ‘Squid Game 2,’ you’ll notice how closely it mirrors the chaos and conflicts of the real world. I hope it serves as a chance for us to reflect on our society and the world we live in.”

Squid Game 2 will be available on Netflix starting December 26th.
