Director Lee Jong Pil shared insights into the casting and roles of the special appearance actors, including Song Kang, in the upcoming film Escape.

At a press screening and media conference held on the afternoon of the 17th, Lee Jong Pil spoke about casting Esom and Song Kang. He mentioned, “I felt a bit guilty asking Esom for a special appearance, but she readily agreed when I asked, saying, ‘What are you up to?’ I’m grateful she filmed with us.”

Lee continued, “Borrowing Koo Kyo Hwan’s words, Song Kang’s character, Sun Woo Min, serves as a Tinker Bell-like figure, revealing the past desires and inner feelings of Hyun Sang (Koo Kyo Hwan’s role). Initially, I thought it might be conventional to cast a female for this role, but I realized it wouldn’t be as interesting. I wanted something short yet impactful, so I decided to cast Song Kang.”

He added, “With Namoo Actors’ CEO Kim Jong Do’s help, we were able to cast Song Kang (who’s in the same agency as Koo Kyo Hwan). The collaboration was enjoyable. Working with Song Kang was amazing; I was in awe while filming.”

Koo Kyo Hwan also expressed his gratitude, saying, “When I heard Song Kang would be my partner, I was thrilled. There’s no one who can show so much emotion in such a short time like Song Kang.”

Escape depicts the deadly chase between North Korean soldier Lim Kyu Nam, who starts an escape for tomorrow, and security officer Ri Hyun Sang, who chases Kyu Nam to protect the today. Directed by Lee Jong Pil, known for Samjin Company English Class (2020) and the Wave original drama One Day Off, the film stars Lee Je Hoon as Lim Kyu Nam, Koo Kyo Hwan as Ri Hyun Sang, and Hong Xa Bin as low-ranking soldier Kim Dong Hyuk, who accelerates Kyu Nam’s escape.

Meanwhile, Escape is set to be released on July 3rd.
