On the December 11th episode of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block, BLACKPINK’s Rosé appeared as a guest, with a heartwarming twist. The recording session saw a full family turnout, with Rosé’s parents, older sister, and even her beloved pet dog, Hank, in attendance.
Host Yoo Jae Suk touched on the global success of Rosé’s solo track “APT,” noting, “As a global star, this must be a joyful occasion for you, but perhaps not an unfamiliar one.” Rosé, however, admitted that some aspects still feel novel, sharing her surreal experience of collaborating with Bruno Mars, an artist whose concerts she had attended as a fan just a year prior. She recounted, “Bruno occasionally tells me, ‘Moments like these don’t come often. Enjoy the present, where people love our song so much.’”
Rosé also confessed to missing her BLACKPINK members. On the day “APT” was released, she spent two hours video calling with Lisa, exchanged texts with Jisoo for an hour, and frequently keeps in touch with Jennie. She expressed, “I think the things we’ve planned for next year will create even greater synergy. As musicians, we need inspiration to grow, so I believe this period (of solo activities) has been all the more important. I think it’ll be even better, with more heartfelt and enjoyable experiences.”
When asked about her journey to becoming a trainee in Korea, Rosé reminisced, “In Australia, there wasn’t much to do, so I spent nights playing the piano and singing. My dad noticed and told me, ‘I heard YG is holding auditions in Australia.’ I wasn’t even sure if I wanted to be a singer. I thought it was impossible.”
Rosé ultimately topped the audition, beating out 700 competitors. However, starting her life in Korea alone at 16 was no easy feat. “I had never lived in Korea before, had no family there, and was never professionally trained in dance or singing. I didn’t know how to do anything, and that was tough. The first year or two were really challenging,” she admitted.
After roughly four years as a trainee, Rosé finally debuted as a member of BLACKPINK in 2016. She cited their 2019 Coachella performance, a first for a K-Pop girl group, as her most memorable stage. BLACKPINK delivered a flawless live set and, four years later, made a triumphant return to Coachella as the first Asian artist to headline the festival.
