A recent social media post by Japanese outlet Share News Japan has sparked outrage for targeting BTS leader RM.
The post features a clip from a 2013 Korean variety show where RM, dressed in traditional Korean clothing hanbok and sings the song “Dokdo is Our Land.” Share News Japan mocked the scene, claiming, “BTS leader wears comfort women’s clothes and sings ‘Takeshima is Korean territory.’” Here, comfort women refer to those who were forced to engage in sexual activity with Japanese soldiers as part of a system of brothels operated by the Imperial Japanese Army in its occupied territories between 1937 and 1945.

Professor Seo Kyung Duk of Sungshin Women’s University explained, “Many BTS fans sent us this video circulating online. It has received over 20 million views, and some groups in Japan are using it to stir up controversy.”
In the past, Japanese right-wing groups have criticized BTS member Jimin for wearing a t-shirt commemorating Korea’s Liberation Day from Japanese colonial rule, and RM for posting a tweet about the same event on social media.
Professor Seo emphasized, “As K-pop’s global influence grows, Japanese right-wing groups are increasingly picking on these issues. It is essential to continuously highlight and correct their inaccurate historical claims and actions both domestically and internationally to prevent such incidents from recurring.”
