The director of My Lovely Sam Soon has admitted that Hyun Bin’s character, Hyun Jin Heon, doesn’t quite align with modern sensibilities and revealed that significant edits were made to reflect that.

At a press event for the Wavve New Classic Project featuring the director’s cut of My Lovely Sam Soon 2024 on the 5th, held at CGV Yongsan in Seoul, director Kim Yoon Cheol addressed questions about Hyun Bin’s character.

Kim explained, “The character played by Hyun Bin was one of the biggest challenges for me while working on this project. I had to think about how it would come across to today’s 20s and 30s. Nineteen years ago, the whole ‘prince charming’ or ‘chaebol heir’ thing worked, and viewers accepted it, but from today’s perspective, it feels a bit much. Jin Heon’s attitude and the way he speaks just don’t fit with today’s times.” He added, “We edited out as much as we could without disrupting the overall story. I’m a bit nervous and cautious about how people will take it since everyone has their own sensitivities.”

Kim Sun A chimed in, saying, “Jin Heon is immature. Sam Soon is more straightforward with her feelings and approaches love in a purer way, while Jin Heon is stuck between Yoo Hee Jin and Kim Sam Soon. He’s immature, and that’s why he can be uncomfortable to watch. From a more mature perspective, Jin Heon is just too young and honest with his emotions. I feel like Sam Soon in 2024 would probably find him annoying and difficult.”

Jung Ryeo Won also shared her thoughts, saying, “Hee Jin got into conflicts with others, struggling to find a way to recover from her pain. These days, I think she’d just let Sam Soon have him without any conflict—maybe even congratulate them.” Her lighthearted comment drew laughter from the audience.

My Lovely Sam Soon 2024 is a revamped version of the iconic 2005 MBC drama that garnered over 50% viewership ratings. Kim Yoon Cheol himself condensed the original 16 episodes into an 8-episode series, which will be available in full on Wavve starting September 6th.
