Squid Game star Lee Jung Jae has finally addressed swirling rumors about his reported 1.3 billion won ($890,000 USD) per-episode paycheck for the hit show’s second season.

“I’ve been wanting to address this when I got the chance,” Lee revealed. “The truth is, even after a great success, Netflix doesn’t spend excessive budgets. They only spend what’s necessary for production, nothing more, nothing less.”

He added, “While many people speculate how much I’m paid, maintaining a good relationship with Netflix was more important to me than money, and I made this clear to my U.S. agency during contract negotiations. If I pushed too hard on negotiations and damaged our relationship with Netflix, I’d face serious backlash in Korea. I couldn’t be the reason for creating difficulties for other actors’ future negotiations.”

The acclaimed actor also responded to criticisms about his character Gi Hun’s supposedly less dynamic arc in Season 2. “He changes again in Season 3,” Lee explained, giving a glimpse. “One of Director Hwang Dong Hyuk’s greatest strengths is creating multiple plot twists within a single scene, and the overall season’s story undergoes major changes. If you watch through Season 3, I think you’ll find Gi Hun’s character development quite intriguing.”

When asked about recent reports suggesting his potential entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Lee laughed it off: “I actually just saw that article on social media today. It was news for me too, so I was quite surprised. I should probably check with my U.S. agency, but I doubt it’s true. Haha.”
