Lee Byung Hun is addressing the unexpected fan response to his on-screen dynamic with co-star Lee Jung Jae in Squid Game 2.

Speaking to Sports Chosun on the 8th, Lee addressed the online buzz with a lighthearted tone. “It’s apparently spreading like a meme among international fans, but I don’t really feel good or bad about it,” he commented.

The global phenomenon Squid Game, which first captivated audiences worldwide upon its September 2021 Netflix debut, has returned after a three-year hiatus. Season 2 chronicles the intense showdown between Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae), who returns to the game seeking revenge, and the enigmatic Front Man (Lee Byung Hun). The series continues under the direction of Hwang Dong Hyuk. Lee Byung Hun, who dominated season 1 as the Front Man, takes on a new challenge in season 2, participating in the game under the alias Oh Young Il.

Discussing his reunion with Lee Jung Jae, Lee reflected, “We did ‘White Nights 3.98’ and ‘Squid Game’ Season 1 together, but funnily enough, we barely had any scenes together in either. We were mostly doing our own things. This was really our first time doing extended scenes together in Season 2, and it was great getting to learn each other’s acting styles and patterns.” He added, “Since we debuted around the same time and we’ve been friends for so long, it hits different. Even while shooting Season 2, I kept thinking, ‘Wow, we’re finally actually doing dialogue together.’”

When asked about global viewers’ BL (Boys’ Love) interpretations, Lee laughed, “I was just as shocked as the Korean fans were. I kept seeing these YouTube channels from international fans with ‘BL’ in capital letters, and I honestly thought they’d just misspelled ‘BH’ for Byung Hun. I was sitting there thinking, ‘Oh, maybe they mean Byung Hun Lee?’ It’s become this whole meme thing with international fans, but I don’t really feel bad about it—not particularly good either.”

Squid Game 2 premiered on Netflix on December 26th, with Season 3 slated for release later this year.
