Kim Nam Gil has talked about his upcoming drama “The Fiery Priest 2”!
SBS’s “The Fiery Priest,” which first aired in 2019 and recorded a peak viewership rating of 22.0 percent, is about Kim Hae Il, a Catholic priest with anger management issues and a cowardly detective who work together to solve a murder case. Kim Nam Gil, Lee Ha Nee, Kim Sung Kyun, and more from Season 1 will be reprising their roles in the upcoming season.
In a recent interview, Kim Nam Gil shared behind-the-scenes details and what fans can look forward to in Season 2. When asked about Kim Hae Il’s main traits in the new season, he joked, “Kim Hae Il is still as angry as ever.”
He continued, “In this season, he teams up with a group of equally wild individuals, creating even bigger synergy. During Season 1, there were times when I wondered if his anger was justified, but in Season 2, he has truly found his identity through solid teamwork.”
Reflecting on his first filming experience for the new season with original cast members Lee Ha Nee and Kim Sung Kyun, whom he reunited with after five years for “Fiery Priest 2,” Kim Nam Gil shared, “It felt quite different from Season 1. Since we knew the original flow, we were able to work together perfectly without any need for practice,” raising expectations for the trio’s unrivaled chemistry.
Kim Nam Gil, who humorously called himself “the madman” and Kim Sung Kyun “the madman’s wife” on social media, commented, “Kim Sung Kyun feels like a soulmate to me. I genuinely like him and feel drawn to him,” reaffirming their strong bromance.
Kim Nam Gil, who has been known as a “gukbap lover” (Korean soup and rice dish) on set since Season 1, remarked, “We filmed a lot in Busan this time, so I had a lot of gukbap there. Kim Sung Kyun even jokingly said that we could fill the sea with all the gukbap we ate. Since we shot during the hotter days, I also had plenty of milmyeon (Korean cold noodles),” hinting at the lighthearted atmosphere on set.
The actor also shared his admiration for the new cast members Sung Joon, Seo Hyun Woo, and BIBI. He remarked, “Sung Joon, with his gentle appearance, will shock everyone by playing a perfectly convincing villain—it’s sure to be an exciting twist for viewers. I watched Seo Hyun Woo’s previous projects and thought he is an excellent actor with a unique presence. He fully embodies the role of Nam Doo Heon, a perfectionist villain. As for BIBI, I expected her to be intense because of her stage charisma, but off-camera, she’s actually very down-to-earth. However, as soon as the camera starts rolling, she dives right into character—it feels like we have one more ‘madman’ on set!”
Kim Nam Gil also mentioned that if Season 2 is successful, he would like to appear on a variety show with the cast.
The production team expressed their gratitude, saying, “We are immensely thankful to Kim Nam Gil for his boundless affection for ‘The Fiery Priest’ and the character Kim Hae Il. His stellar performance, anchoring the drama, will continue in Season 2. Please look forward to it.”
“The Fiery Priest 2” is set to premiere on November 8 at 10 p.m. KST as the follow-up to “The Judge from Hell.”
