The 60th Baeksang Arts Awards nominations are out, and some surprising omissions have sparked debate among fans. While Kim Soo Hyun landed a Best Actor nod for his role in tvN’s Queen of Tears, his co-star Kim Ji Won was missing from the Best Actress category, raising questions about the selection process.
The nominations, announced on April 8th, recognized the best in television, film, and theater over the past year. Kim Soo Hyun is up against Namkoong Min of MBC’s My Dearest, Ryu Seung Ryong of Disney Plus’s Moving, Yoo Yeon Seok of TVING’s A Bloody Lucky Day and Yim Si Wan of Coupang Play’s Boyhood for Best Actor.
The Best Actress category, however, has drawn scrutiny. Actresses Ra Mi Ran of JTBC’s The Good Bad Mother, Ahn Eun Jin of MBC’s My Dearest, Uhm Jung Hwa of JTBC’s Doctor Cha, Lee Hanee of MBC’s Knight Flower and Lim Ji Yeon of Genie TV’s Lies Hidden in My Garden received nominations. But fans are questioning the exclusion of Kim Ji Won, the leading lady in the hit drama Queen of Tears which achieved a peak viewership rating of 19%.
The debate extends beyond Kim Ji Won. The SBS drama Revenant scored a Best Drama nomination, and writer Kim Eun Hee got a nod for Best TV Screenplay. However, its leading actress, Kim Tae Ri, was not included in the Best Actress category.
Online communities and social media are rife with questions. Fans are asking, “Why wasn’t Kim Ji Won nominated? Couldn’t they have left both of them out?” or “How can a show still airing be nominated for Best Drama?” Others point to Kim Tae Ri’s distinct performance in Revenant and wonder why she wasn’t recognized.
