KBS has apologized for causing damage to cultural heritage during the filming of its new drama “The First Night With the Duke” (working title).
On January 2, a netizen took to their social media to criticize the filming site of KBS2’s new drama “The First Night With the Duke,” pointing out that nails were driven into Andong Byeongsan Seowon, a location designated as Historic Site No. 260 and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Later that day, Andong City Hall clarified, “It is true that we granted filming permission. The conditions of the permit explicitly state, ‘The installation of additional structures and any actions that may damage the cultural heritage within the protected area are prohibited,’ and, ‘Filming must be conducted in a manner that does not affect the safety and preservation of the cultural heritage.’”
As the controversy continued to escalate, KBS issued an apology as below:
First and foremost, we sincerely apologize for causing concern to viewers regarding this incident.
The production team had obtained permission to film at Andong Byeongsan Seowon at the end of last year. However, during the process of setting up props, a visitor at the site raised objections, questioning how nails could be driven into a cultural heritage site to hang props.
Regardless of the reasons, KBS recognizes the seriousness of the situation that occurred on-site and deeply regrets what has happened. We are currently working to fully understand the details of the incident and are discussing the best possible methods for restoration. In relation to the situation at the time, the drama’s representatives are in communication with the Byeongsan Seowon officials, conducting on-site inspections, and coordinating the necessary restoration procedures. Furthermore, we are actively discussing measures to prevent such incidents from happening again and addressing any additional damage that may arise.
KBS once again offers our deepest and most sincere apologies to everyone for this situation related to the drama filming.
“The First Night With the Duke” is a romance fantasy that tells the story of an ordinary college student whose soul becomes transferred into a minor character of a romance novel and spends the night with the obsessive male lead. The drama stars Girls’ Generation’s Seohyun and 2PM’s Taecyeon.
