While Jung Woo Sung recently made headlines for acknowledging paternity of a child with model Moon Gabi, another story about his quiet generosity is also gaining attention. The actor has been supporting bobsled athlete Kang Han, an orphan who grew up in foster care, offering him financial and emotional support over the years.
In February 2022, Kang Han shared this story on the KTV web variety show “Kkondae Grannies.” “I lost my parents when I was young and grew up in an orphanage while pursuing sports. I was told my mother gave birth to me when she was 15, but I’ve never seen her face,” Kang revealed.
After leaving the orphanage at 18, Kang’s athletic career gained momentum. He was selected as a national bobsled representative in 2019 and 2021 but faced setbacks due to a leg injury that kept him from competing in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. The injury also left him struggling financially, but Jung Woo Sung stepped in to help.
“Woo Sung isn’t blood-related, but he’s like a family to me,” Kang said. “He covered my surgery and rehabilitation costs, contributing tens of millions of won (tens of thousands of dollars).”
Kang shared how their bond began. “When I was a first-year high school student, I happened to attend the Busan International Film Festival with an acquaintance. While talking at a café, Jung Woo Sung was sitting nearby,” Kang recalled. “It’s all thanks to him that I’ve made it this far. I’m so grateful. I’ll work hard to succeed and repay his kindness.”
Meanwhile, Jung Woo Sung has publicly acknowledged his son with Moon Gabi but clarified that marriage is not in his plans. According to legal guidelines, child support can be set at up to 3 million KRW ($2,250 USD) per month, but wealthier individuals like Jung may voluntarily pay higher amounts. Some speculate he could provide tens of millions of KRW ($15,000–$20,000 USD) per month.
