Ji Chang Wook opened up about his challenging past on the July 24 episode of tvN’s You Quiz on the Block.
The actor expressed deep gratitude for his mother, sharing, “She’s my biggest inspiration.” Reflecting on his difficult childhood, Ji Chang Wook revealed, “My dad passed away when I was young, so my mom raised me alone. It must have been incredibly tough for her.”
To make ends meet, his mother ran small restaurants in their neighborhood. “She operated a barbecue place and a spicy fish stew restaurant, all by herself. When things got hectic, I’d help out with serving. Cleaning the grill grates was the hardest part of the barbecue place, and cleaning the fish tanks was the most difficult part of the fish stew restaurant,” he recalled.
He continued, “To be honest, we couldn’t afford school fees. The tuition was too expensive. So, I did part-time jobs with a friend who is now a CEO. We worked in cafes, rice wine bars, but the job that paid the most was loading and unloading packages. I lived with the goal of ‘I need to make sure mom doesn’t struggle, I need to make sure she doesn’t worry about money.’”
The actor’s love for his mother hasn’t changed. “I know material things aren’t enough. What truly matters is spending time together. I try to have dinner with her as often as possible. We’re more like friends,” he said. Ji Chang Wook added, “When the world feels overwhelming, coming home to see my mom living her ordinary life is incredibly comforting.”
