K-pop group (G)I-DLE is facing internal turmoil as tensions rise between member Jeon Soyeon and their agency, Cube Entertainment.
Jeon Soyeon sparked controversy when she modified the lyrics of her solo song during a (G)I-DLE world tour concert. The modified lyrics included, “Should I give a damn about what they think?” and “My contract ends in November. Who can stop me?” As the lyrics hinted at her potential contract termination in November, it led to speculation about the group’s future.
Cube Entertainment quickly refuted these claims, stating that the members’ contracts extend to 2025 and that Jeon Soyeon’s lyrics were simply a creative expression.
However, Jeon Soyeon has since countered the agency’s statement, maintaining that the lyrics were not misleading and were part of a collaborative creative process. She also expressed disappointment in the agency’s handling of the situation.
She stated, “I do not lie, harm anyone, or intentionally engage in actions that would prick my conscience. In this performance as well. I didn’t write down any lies or hide anything from the company. We rehearsed dozens of times in front of everyone and created the stage together.” She added, “Having spent over 10 years with the agency, I don’t want people to have negative feelings about the company just by reading articles. Words can be misunderstood if they are not conveyed correctly.”
She also mentioned, “However, this situation seems to be another reminder of our company’s inadequacy in responding to such situations.”
Cube Entertainment has acknowledged that while they were aware of a surprise performance, they were not informed of the specific content of Jeon Soyeon’s lyrics.
