Hwasa delivers a raw and emotional confession about her struggles with extreme dieting on SBS’s Special – Bodymentary. The singer recounts the immense pressure to conform to societal beauty standards, revealing that she once resorted to harmful measures to achieve a target weight of 48kg (approximately 106 pounds).

Reflecting on her early debut days, Hwasa shared, “I chased unattainable standards and ended up taking drastic measures like using pills to empty myself. It was a time when I lost not only my body but also who I was.”

She spoke candidly about the toll that focusing on weight as a number took on her identity. “I wanted to live as myself, but back then, it felt impossible. Eventually, my body and mind couldn’t handle it anymore,” she confessed, her voice filled with emotion.

Hwasa’s story resonated deeply, illustrating the damaging weight of societal beauty ideals. Despite her confident and liberated persona on stage, she revealed the hidden struggles she endured to meet the public’s expectations. “Forcing myself to empty out wasn’t just about not eating—it felt like erasing my existence. At some point, I couldn’t even recognize the person in the mirror,” she admitted.

Now, Hwasa is in a much healthier place, free from the obsessive grip of appearance standards. She said, “I’ve found a way to live as Hwasa, embracing who I am. I’ve learned how to love my body and mind more.” Through her journey, she has redefined what true beauty means.

The Bodymentary special also features candid confessions from Kim Wan Sun, Han Seung Yeon, Soyou, and Jun Hyo Seong, stars who defined their respective eras. Together, they shared their experiences of navigating the scars left by a society fixated on appearances. The episode airs on December 8th at 11:05 PM KST.
