The famous line from Gossip Girl has become a commonly used phrase in various works, including Korean ones, whose popularity can be explained by the intriguing image of a woman declaring herself “crazy.” There is no doubt that anyone who has watched “Gossip Girl,” which features upper-class high school students engaging in intense drama, will understand the lesson that this series conveys, namely that one crazy woman in a group is enough, unlike the series “The Frog,” which seems to have no shortage of crazy women.
Indeed, from a serial killer who loves murder, to a policewoman who gets excited at crime scenes, to a woman driven crazy by traumatic experiences, this series is full of characters who seem to have lost some screws and among all these extreme characters, there is one who seems to be an ordinary and normal woman since she has a respectable job, a happy family and is even pregnant. However, this ordinary woman seems to be the only one who can stand up to the killer but the question is what exactly is it about in “The Frog”.
A pregnant woman who shows real madness
The thriller “The Frog” stars Kim Yoon-seok as Jeon Yeong-ha, who runs a boarding house deep in the forest and meets the mysterious killer Yoo Seong-a played by Go Min-si. The storyline switches between the past and present in a way that leaves even viewers puzzled, with viewers having a hard time following the characters’ unclear motives, and many viewers even stating, “I have no idea what’s going on halfway through the series.”
If we talk about Seong-a’s character, she is supposed to overshadow the others with her overflowing madness, but turns out to be rather annoying. Indeed, contrary to her initial image as a character who kills people on a whim, she turns out to be a privileged character who sells her artwork thanks to her father’s connections and hires famous lawyers thanks to her fortune after committing a murder, so the people around her appear more like victims of her privileged tantrums rather than being overwhelmed by a real madwoman.
What’s interesting is that Jeon Eui-seon (played by Roh Yoon-seo), who is the opposite of Seong-a, really fascinates the viewers, because from her first appearance, she is presented as a completely ordinary and harmless person. A pharmacist and pregnant, she leads a peaceful family life, visiting her father’s boarding house with her in-laws. Unknowingly, Eui-seon invites Seong-a, whose madness she does not perceive, to go to the boarding house and once there, the latter engages in a fierce territorial battle with Yeong-ha, killing people and trying to take control of the boarding house.
Oddly enough, it’s not Yeong-ha, the police, or Seong-a’s father who finally subdues Seong-a, but Eui-seon. Worried about not hearing from her father, Eui-seon goes to the boarding house and is left alone with Seong-a, and though Seong-a mocks her, Eui-seon remains unmoved, even when Seong-a reveals, “Your father and I are accomplices to murder,” to which Eui-seon sarcastically replies, “Interesting,” and adds, “I’m a pharmacist. How about I give you some medication and recommend a psychiatrist?”
With her evil strength, Seong-a tries to dominate the pregnant Eui-seon, but the latter reads Seong-a’s moves and outwits her perfectly. If not for Seong-a’s latest sneaky tactic, Eui-seon would have completely triumphed in this scene.
Eui-seon is portrayed as a strong character capable of facing a killer, unlike the gentle and kind image usually associated with pregnant women in films, and this unconventional image resonated with viewers, eliciting notable reactions such as, ” I have never seen a pregnant woman character presented in this way before. “,” Pregnant woman stronger than killer “ » or even « If Seong-a represents “false madness,” then Eui-seon is “true madness.”” »
