The film Harbin has been officially invited to the Gala Presentations section of the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), marking its world premiere to a global audience.

Directed by Woo Min Ho, Harbin is a spy drama set in 1909 that follows a thrilling chase between those heading to Harbin with a singular purpose and those pursuing them. The film has been officially selected for the Gala Presentations at TIFF, which will be held from September 5th to September 15th. On June 18th, TIFF announced the film’s invitation and its world premiere screening at the festival.

TIFF is renowned as one of the world’s top four international film festivals, alongside Cannes, Berlin, and Venice. It is a significant event where numerous Hollywood commercial films debut, attracting key players from the North American film industry. Harbin stands out as a rare South Korean historical film invited to such a prestigious international festival.

TIFF’s executive director, Cameron Bailey, expressed his excitement, stating, “We are thrilled to host the world premiere of this historically significant film by an incredible director.” Senior programmer Anita Lee added, “The film’s comprehensive artistic portrayal of a historical event is astounding, with beautiful cinematography, acting, and storytelling.”

Woo Min Ho, known for his stylish direction and profound insights into historical narratives through films like The Man Standing Next and Inside Men, brings his latest project Harbin to life. The film was produced in collaboration with Hive Media Corp., known for 12.12: The Day, and features cinematographer Hong Kyung Pyo, acclaimed for his work on Snowpiercer, Parasite, and Deliver Us from Evil. The film’s diverse locations span Korea, Latvia, and Mongolia, enriching its cinematic appeal.

Following its world premiere at TIFF, Harbin is set for a domestic release in the latter half of the year.
