The Korean entertainment industry has come to a virtual standstill as celebrities join the nation in mourning one of the country’s worst aviation disasters.
K-pop icon G-Dragon took to Instagram on December 29th, sharing a black-and-white image of his signature daisy flower accompanied by a yellow ribbon emoji. Jung Il Woo posted a stark black background with white text reading “expressing deep condolences” and “Pray for you.”
Sung Si Kyung held a moment of silence during his year-end concert, saying, “I would like to take a moment to think about those who lost their lives and those who are in grief.” Lee Chung Ah announced the postponement of her YouTube content through her community page, stating, “I pray for those who lost their lives in this accident. My heart goes out to the bereaved families.”
Park Myung Soo shared an image of chrysanthemums with the message “May the deceased rest in peace,” while Jun Hyun Moo changed his Instagram profile picture to a chrysanthemum, expressing his condolences. Cho Sae Ho shared, “My heart is heavy after hearing about the plane crash. I send my sincere condolences to the bereaved families. May the deceased rest in peace.”
SEVENTEEN’s S.Coups also joined the condolences, writing, “I extend my deepest condolences and sympathies to the victims and their families affected by this accident. May the deceased rest in peace.”
The tragedy occurred at 9:03 AM on December 29th KST at Muan International Airport, when Jeju Air flight 7C2216 from Bangkok, carrying 181 passengers and crew, was severely damaged and caught fire. The aircraft was completely destroyed except for its tail section, resulting in 179 fatalities, marking the deadliest aviation disaster in Korean history.
In response, MBC has converted its 2024 MBC Drama Awards to a pre-recorded broadcast. The network had already canceled its 2024 MBC Entertainment Awards scheduled for December 29th, and some sources suggest the Drama Awards might face complete cancellation.
As the nation continues to mourn this unprecedented tragedy, all eyes are on the remaining year-end ceremonies, including KBS Drama Awards and SBS Entertainment Awards scheduled for December 31st.
