Released on July 28, the action drama film has been reigning the box office for almost two weeks.
‘Escape From Mogadishu’ Expected to Hit the 2 Million Movie-goers
In a report cited by a local outlet, National Film Council’s integrated computer network for movie theater tickets noted that the newly debuted movie garnered a recorded 1,712,265 cumulative audiences.
Moreover, “Escape From Mogadishu” also reached over 2.7 times the number of viewers during the weekend compared to the action-adventure film “The Suicide Squad,” which was also released on the same day Jo In Sung’s movie.
With the impressive performance shown by “Escape From Mogadishu,” it has sustained its top ranking at the weekend box office for two consecutive weeks and is predicted to be the first-ever K-movie to hit the two million audiences in 2021.
Currently, the movie has sold 1.71 million tickets, raking in $14.46 million.
Seemingly, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) released the list of 10 top-grossing films in South Korea from August 6 to 9.

Interestingly, the “Escape From Mogadishu” cast celebrated their achievement after surpassing the one million moviegoers with a series of photos thanking the audience for their support.
“This isn’t a dream, is it? One million viewers with #Mogadishu. Celebrating 1 million hearts. Revealing handwritten letters full of actors. Thank you for your support,” the caption reads as shared in Lotte Entertainment’s official Instagram.

2021 Top 10 Highest Grossing Films in South Korea
In the first half of 2021, award-winning “Minari,” “Hard Hit,” and “Mission Impossible” are among the K-movies included in the ten highest-grossing films in South Korea.
Interestingly, “Fast & Furious 9” tops the chart garnering 2,279,952 tickets sold and $19.42 million gross.

Helmed by “The Battleship Island,” and veteran director Ryu Seung Wan, the action-drama film is said to be based on real events that depict life-and-death incidents of South Korean and North Korean embassy workers in the Somali Civil War.
Set in the 90s, Kim Yun Seok, Heo Joon Ho, Koo Kyo Hwan, and Jo In Sung’s characters plan their escape from Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia.

“Escape From Mogadishu” is Jo In Sung’s return to the big screen following the 2018 historical drama film “The Great Battle.”
In his recent interview, the versatile actor spoke about his thoughts on leading the action-packed movie. The award-winning South Korean star is looking forward to appearing in more diverse characters, not only in films but also in K-dramas.
“Starting with this film, I hope to be back with more diverse pieces. Not only through movies, but also through TV series and variety shows,” he stated, adding, “I hope to increase the opportunities I have to freely communicate with you all.”
