With BLACKPINK’s Jennie in hot water for allegedly smoking indoors, former entertainment reporter Lee Jin Ho took to his YouTube channel on July 9th to offer some insights. His video sheds light on the industry norms that might explain why some celebrities choose to smoke indoors.
Lee addressed Jennie’s situation directly, stating, “Smoking during photoshoots and makeup sessions is actually pretty common among celebrities. It doesn’t matter their age or gender – you see a lot of them using e-cigarettes.”

“Celebrities often have to maintain strict diets for days leading up to a shoot,” Lee explained. “This can make them really sensitive on set. For them, e-cigarettes seem to be the only way to manage stress. Staff often find it easier to just let them vape rather than deal with a potential meltdown.”
Lee also highlighted the risk factors for celebrities who smoke outdoors. “They could be seen or photographed by fans or paparazzi, which could damage their image.” He claimed that some agencies even recommend indoor smoking for this reason.
Questioning the practicality of stopping a celebrity who wants to smoke on set, Lee added, “Many celebrities ask permission to smoke. Realistically, how many staff members are going to tell them no?”
He even touched on past practices, stating, “Smoking cigarettes on set used to be more common back in the day. Some celebrities would even smoke around pregnant staff members. Given that, staff members tend to be more understanding with e-cigarettes.”
Lee added that industry insiders were surprised that a smoking scene was filmed and included in the final edit of promotional material, given that such scenes are typically not filmed in this type of situation.
