Chef Yu Bibim, known as the “King Bibim” for his appearance on the Netflix show Culinary Class Wars, has confessed to past illegal activities related to his restaurant business. In a handwritten letter posted on his Instagram on November 1st, he apologized for operating his restaurant without the proper licenses and for using illegal methods.

Yu Bibim revealed that he had failed in numerous business ventures, including fruit stands, food stalls, and beauty salons, before starting a restaurant in 2003. He admitted to operating the restaurant without the required permits, leading to his arrest and subsequent probation.

Even after a year-long closure, Yu Bibim reopened his restaurant, this time under his wife’s name and categorized as a “performance, exhibition, and Korean food experience” to circumvent regulations. He expressed his frustration with the rigid regulations and his attempts to seek changes.

Despite acknowledging the illegality of his actions, Yu Bibim emphasized the difficult circumstances that led him to make these choices. He stated that he had been solely focused on making a living for the past 20 years but now intends to dedicate the next 20 years to promoting Korean bibimbap culture.

As a form of atonement, Yu Bibim pledged to open his former restaurant to the public free of charge, transforming it into a space for bibimbap exhibitions and performances. He also promised to operate his new restaurant, located in Hanok Village, legally and with the highest quality ingredients.
