Coupang Play has unveiled a special poster and first trailer for its upcoming series Newtopia, promising a fresh spin on the zombie genre with a distinctive romantic comedy flavor.
The streaming platform’s new original series follows the story of Jae Yoon, a soldier, and Young Joo, his girlfriend waiting for his military service to end (known as “gomsin” in Korea), as they desperately try to reach each other across zombie-infested Seoul.
The newly released poster, rendered in vibrant illustration style, captures the series’ unique characters against a striking pink backdrop. The artwork depicts hordes of zombies emerging from various corners of downtown Seoul. The visual gets even more compelling with its protagonists—Jae Yoon and Young Joo at opposite ends, desperately running toward each other while fighting off blood-soaked zombies.
The trailer maintains this playful tone while showcasing the series’ bold vision. On the very day soldier Jae Yoon (Park Jung Min) and his girlfriend Young Joo (Jisoo) decide to break up, a zombie virus overtakes the city. The preview offers glimpses of zombies dramatically crashing onto Young Joo’s car and various undead creatures swarming the tower where Jae Yoon’s unit is stationed, promising a “200% pure zom-com.”
Despite their dire circumstances, the couple fights back with whatever they can find—Jae Yoon wielding a flamethrower while Young Joo swings a golf club, each battling the zombie hordes in their own unique way as they try to reach each other.
The trailer is elevated by its creative use of classical music that shifts between dramatic and lighthearted tones. Special effects, including zombies bursting through the series logo and eyeballs popping into frame, showcase the show’s distinctive style while staying true to its genre-blending approach.
Newtopia, heralding a new chapter in K-zombie entertainment, is set to premiere on Coupang Play on February 7th, 2025, at 8 PM KST.
