Byeon Woo Seok, recently embroiled in an overzealous security controversy, returned to Korea on the afternoon of July 16th. Notably, his security detail was halved compared to his departure.
According to Incheon International Airport Corporation, the actor arrived at Terminal 2 after completing his “2024 Byeon Woo Seok Asia Fanmeeting Tour SUMMER LETTER” in Hong Kong. Several entertainment media outlets reported that Byeon Woo Seok was accompanied by officials from his agency, Varo Entertainment, and three private security guards.
When the Lovely Runner star departed for Hong Kong on July 12th, he was accompanied by six private security guards. During his departure, videos surfaced on social media showing these guards blocking airport entrances and checking citizens’ passports and boarding passes. This led to criticism, with many questioning, “Is he a royalty or what?” A video showing guards flashing lights at airport lounge passengers further fueled the controversy. In response, Varo Entertainment issued an official apology on July 15th, stating, “We deeply regret the incidents that occurred during the security operations.”
Despite the reduced security, some chaotic scenes were observed during his return. Fans rushed to get a closer look at him, causing a near-miss incident where Byeon Woo Seok almost lost his balance on an escalator. These moments, shared on social media and online communities, prompted comments such as, “It looks like an accident waiting to happen,” and “Why are those people even there?”
Incheon Airport Police have launched a preliminary investigation into the private security firm. They are reviewing whether the guards’ actions constitute assault or coercion. Additionally, they will assess if blocking other passengers from accessing the airport lounge disrupted the lounge operator’s business.
