On August 1, streaming service Coupang Play revealed footage from its new K-drama titled Newtopia, written by Han Jin-won and Ji Ho-jin, and directed by Yoon Sung-hyun.
Newtopia tells the story of Jae-yun (played by Park Jung-min), a soldier, and his girlfriend Young-joo (played by Jisoo), who find themselves running towards each other through the streets of Seoul invaded by zombies.
Park Jung-min, known for his notable roles in The Drug King et Start-Up, will play Jae-yun, a late soldier who feels anxious about his future. Jisoo, who caused a sensation with her role in Snowdrop and who will also appear in the film Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint, will play Young-joo, Jae-yun’s girlfriend, recently hired as an engineer.
In Newtopia, Park Jung-min and Jisoo will play lovers who run towards each other despite the danger of a zombie-filled Seoul.
The released footage shows Jae-yun facing the zombie crisis during his military service, with a tense and shocked expression. His colleague, In-ho (played by Lim Sung-jae), appears even more surprised, reflecting the perilous situation. Meanwhile, Young-joo appears rather serene in an alley, sparking even more curiosity about the plot.
Director Yoon Sung-hyun, who left his mark with his first film The Guard and its unique style in Time to Hunt, explores a new genre where apocalypse meets romance with this first series. His collaboration with Park Jung-min for the third time, after The Guard et Time to Hunt, raises a lot of expectations.
Screenwriter Han Jin-won, winner of an Oscar for best original screenplay with P, and Ji Ho-jin, known for the stylized action of The K!llers’ Shopping Mall, create a new story of young love that must survive even in the face of a zombie apocalypse.
