IU revealed her ongoing battle with Skeeter syndrome during a candid appearance on close friend Yoo In Na’s YouTube channel “Yoo In Radio” on December 19.
The singer-actress opened up about her severe allergic condition, stating, “When I get bitten by mosquitoes, it leads to illness. Wherever I get bitten, I develop lumps like ‘The Lumpy Old Man (Korean children story).’” She continued, “It gets so bad that I need antibiotics because it oozes and hurts. It’s like a mosquito allergy.”
When Yoo In Na did a quick search and noted, “I looked it up – it’s called Skeeter syndrome,” IU nodded in recognition, explaining “That’s right. The bitten areas swell up severely like edema and develop blisters.” She went on, “For some reason, mosquitoes always bite my face. And it leaves scars. Areas where I was bitten as a child still have dead tissue. There are spots where I can’t feel pain even if pricked with a needle.”
In a lighter moment, she added, “That’s why I hate mosquitoes even more than cockroaches.”
In related news, IU is set to appear in the upcoming Netflix series When Life Gives You Tangerines in 2025 and is slated to star in MBC’s new drama Wife of a 21st Century Prince (working title).
