Youn Yuh Jung graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar Korea’s latest issue!
After her shoot, Youn Yuh Jung talked about why she chose to join the second season of the Netflix series “Beef.” She shared, “I instinctively feel drawn to Korean-American projects. I had several meetings with director Lee Sung Jin, and he said he had a story he wanted to tell through me. It’s interesting, because it was a perspective different from Korean directors. In Korea, I’m usually offered grandmother roles, but [Korean-American directors], having lived in a completely different world, see me differently. I’m quite conservative in my personal life, but oddly, I enjoy taking on challenges in my work. I live such a structured life that maybe that adventurous spirit comes out in my acting.”
After 58 years in acting, Youn Yuh Jung reflected on what keeps her motivated. “I’ve thought about it: ‘Maybe it’s time to retire?’ I can’t even read a book for more than an hour at home because my eyes hurt. In the end, it’s daily life that matters most. There are so many people around me who are sick. What they want most is simply to live their daily lives. It’s not about chasing new desires; at the end, they just wish they could step outside the hospital and take a walk. Acting is my daily life. That’s why I give my best in every role. It’s how I live.”
Youn Yuh Jung dislikes being called an “artist,” but accepts the title of “master.” “I don’t like ‘artist,’” she said. “Maybe after I’m gone, someone might say, ‘She was an artist,’ but for now, it feels a bit much. However, I would like to be a master. If I’ve spent 60 years walking one path, I think I could be worthy of that respect.”
