Seo Hyun Jin shared her candid thoughts on the polarizing themes of Netflix’s The Trunk during an interview held on December 6ty. The drama, which explores the concept of contract marriage for a year, has sparked conversations for its bold and provocative premise.

“Contract marriage as a job” is how the show describes its central theme. While some have praised its blend of mystery and romance, others have criticized it for being potentially controversial, with some even accusing it of glorifying prostitution.

When asked about these divided opinions, Seo Hyun Jin said, “I chose this project because I was really drawn to No In Ji as a character. I didn’t feel any strong discomfort or resistance to the script, but I did approach it differently because its premise is so far removed from my own personal values.”

She further elaborated, “In Ji’s life isn’t ordinary. To maintain the house she’s been waiting in for five years, having a job was essential, almost like a parallel universe,” adding, “We all have a public face and a private self, and for In Ji, her job represents that public face. The moment she closes the door, she steps into her private self. It’s like the divide between public and personal spaces.”

Seo Hyun Jin also acknowledged the drama’s darker tone. “I’m aware of the mixed reactions. Some people enjoy it, but others might find it uncomfortable. Our show has a heavier tone, and there’s only a small corner where it ‘pops.’ It’s not the kind of drama you watch to unwind after a long day,” she admitted. “But if you’re looking for something immersive and have some free time on the weekend, it’s a great show to dive into.”

The Trunk is now available for streaming on Netflix.
