Squid Game director Hwang Dong Hyuk spoke about Park Sung Hoon‘s onscreen character Hyun Joo during the press conference for Netflix’s Squid Game Season 2, held at Seoul’s Dongdaemun DDP on December 9th.
Park introduced the character, saying, “Hyun Joo is a transgender woman who enters the deadly game to raise money for gender confirmation surgery. Unlike many other participants, she is courageous and selfless. She also has strong leadership qualities.”
Director Hwang explained, “I wanted to include more marginalized characters in the second season, similar to Ali the migrant worker and the North Korean defector in the first season. For Season 2, I wanted to include at least one or two more minority characters. That’s how the character of Hyun Joo, an LGBTQ+ participant, came to be.”
He added, “Personally, I believe Hyun Joo will become one of the most beloved and impactful characters in Season 2. While she represents someone severely oppressed and isolated in a chaotic world, she also exemplifies the resilience of humanity. I think audiences will resonate deeply with her story.”
