The Netflix original series The Trunk revolves around NM, a company that offers fixed-term marriage services. This concept has sparked criticism, with some accusing the show of “glamorizing contractual marriages bordering on prostitution.” Addressing these concerns, Gong Yoo said, “First of all, I’m not someone who likes conventional or predictable things. And honestly, I didn’t even want to say those words out loud… Seeing articles with headlines linking the show to prostitution was shocking to me. It was honestly quite jarring to see things taken that far.”

He continued, “I expected polarized opinions, and I see it as a perspective held by some, not the majority. When a show is simultaneously released in over 190 countries, you naturally get a wide range of reactions. Even in Korea, opinions are divided. What I think is clear is that our intention as creators does exist, and that’s an undeniable fact. It’s not that we ignored negative views or claimed they were wrong. If every single person saw it that way, then yes, there’s an issue. But many didn’t view it like that, which is also a fact. So, I just consider it as part of the spectrum of diverse perspectives.”

He added, “When I first read the script, I decided very quickly to join the project. I already knew there would be strong opinions about it, but I made my choice with that in mind. The current range of reactions doesn’t bother me—I think it’s something that deserves respect.”

“As for the negative and uncomfortable interpretations, I personally didn’t view the story that way—if I had, I wouldn’t have agreed to do the project. It’s purely fictional, and the extreme premise is just a vehicle to convey a bigger message. That’s what made me want to be part of it,” he explained.
