Kim Sung Ryoung has candidly shared the effort she put into preparing for her scene in a slip dress in A Virtuous Business.
In a recent interview with StarNews at a café in Gangnam, Seoul, Kim Sung Ryoung reflected on her role in JTBC’s weekend drama A Virtuous Business, which aired its finale on November 17th.
Set in 1992, the series explores the lives of four women who launch a door-to-door sex toy business in a rural village. Through their struggles, they find independence, growth, and friendship. Kim Sung Ryoung played Oh Geum Hee, the eldest of the “Sales Sisters.”
Kim Sung Ryoung revealed the meticulous preparation behind the scene in her slip dress, which became a hot topic among viewers. “I put so much effort into that slip scene. I even got lifting treatments on my arms, which cost me hundreds of thousands of won (approximately a few hundred USD). I also didn’t eat from the day before until the shoot,” she admitted openly.
Since A Virtuous Business is set in the 1990s, Kim Sung Ryoung also discussed her approach to Oh Geum Hee’s fashion. “I looked up a lot of 90s outfits for reference. I searched for retro styles and found pieces that I thought would suit Geum Hee. I bought them and handed them over to the costume team to mix and match,” she explained.
The actress also shared how her personality influenced her portrayal of Oh Geum Hee. “There’s no such thing as 100% acting. I think the character you see has part of me in her. Even if it’s not in the lines or acting itself, there’s a vibe that comes through, and that’s something of mine,” she said.
Kim Sung Ryoung then talked about Geum Hee’s role within the “Sales Sisters.” She explained, “I wanted to portray her as an eldest sister who takes a step back rather than being in the forefront. I wanted to be a constant support, and that’s how I approached playing Geum Hee.”
She also touched on her personal philosophy. “I don’t like standing out in general. It’s a habit I’ve developed as I’ve gotten older. I’m always thinking, ‘How do I avoid coming off as a boomer?’ It makes me more cautious. I feel like staying in one place too long is not a good thing, and that’s what being an adult is about. I think it’s better to step back and keep a respectful distance.”
