The director of the highly anticipated Netflix series “The Trunk” has revealed exciting details about what to expect from the drama!

Based on a novel, “The Trunk” is about a secretive marriage service whose hidden truths begin to unravel when a mysterious trunk appears by a lakeside. The story follows Noh In Ji (Seo Hyun Jin), an employee at NM (New Marriage) who finds herself deeply alone despite living with a “contract husband” every year, and Han Jeong Won (Gong Yoo), who enters into this contract marriage in an ironic attempt to salvage his previous marriage.

This marks the first collaboration between director Kim Kyu Tae—known for his work on “Our Blues” and “It’s Okay, That’s Love“—and Netflix.

On why he decided to work on the series, director Kim Kyu Tae shared, “When I first read the script, it was refreshingly different from the traditional writing method of dramas. Moreover, I was curious and excited about working with Seo Hyun Jin and Gong Yoo.” He added, “The storytelling and direction were adapted in a completely different tone from the original, with the romance and mystery being expanded and intensified. I spent a lot of time discussing with the team to create a ‘bold yet restrained style.’ I aimed to create a unique atmosphere and layered imagery.”

He continued, “The major themes of ‘The Trunk’ are ‘romance’ and ‘mystery.’ I wanted to keep the audience questioning and draw them into an emotional psychological game.” He also praised the script, saying, “Scripwriter Park Eun Young has meticulously crafted dramatic tension with a unique narrative structure that highlights her distinct style.”

He hinted at hidden details in the drama, noting, “The most important spaces—the garden house, the chandelier, and the trunk—were designed with bold tones by the art director. The visual image of ‘The Trunk’ was so powerful that the set itself could be said to carry the show.”

He further emphasized the role of music, sound, and editing in preserving the mystery, saying, “In the music, we aimed for an eerie, sensual, and unconventional feel. The sound design used subtle white noise to heighten the audience’s senses. The editing struck a perfect balance, alternating between the mystery and romance with impeccable timing,” building even more anticipation for the series.

“The Trunk” is set to premiere on November 29 via Netflix. Check out a teaser here!
