The Seoul Drama Awards 2024 has announced its winners, with director Park Chan Wook taking home the prestigious Golden Bird Prize.
Park Chan Wook was recognized for his work as co-showrunner and executive producer of HBO’s The Sympathizer. The series explores the complex identity of a Vietnamese-American man caught between two worlds and captivated audiences worldwide with its distinctive cinematography and thought-provoking narrative.
The Grand Prize of the International Competition went to Brazil’s Justice: Misconduct. This series delves into the flaws of the judicial system through the stories of individuals entangled in the criminal justice system and received praise from the jury for its innovative narrative structure.
The International Competition category also saw notable wins. Netflix’s 3 Body Problem swept the awards, winning both Best Miniseries and Best Screenwriter. Czech Television’s The Saint, a captivating drama that unravels the hidden secrets of a historical hero with a surprising twist, won the Best TV Movie Award. Jiřina Bohdalová, a veteran actress who delivered a powerful performance at the age of 93, took home the Best Actress Award.
Korean dramas and actors received high praise from global judges. CJ ENM O’PEN’s Bruised Like a Peach won Best TV Movie, while KBS’s Korea-Khitan War took home Best Series. Director Park In Je earned the Best Director Award for Disney Plus’s Moving and Song Kang Ho was recognized as Best Actor for his role in Disney Plus’s Uncle Samsik.
The Outstanding Korean Drama Award was given to Disney Plus’s Moving and Studio Dragon’s Queen of Tears. Yeom Hye Ran and Ahn Jae Hong were recognized with Best Actress and Best Actor Awards for their performances in Netflix’s Mask Girl. BSS received the Outstanding Korean Drama O.S.T Award for Queen of Tears.
In addition, the Outstanding Asia Stars Award went to Byeon Woo Seok and Kim Hye Yoon from Lovely Runner, as well as Siti Saleha from Malaysia, Desmond Tan from Singapore, Ochi Rosdiana from Indonesia, Metawin Opas-iamkajorn from Thailand, and Kim Chiu from the Philippines. Japanese drama Eye Love You received a Special Prize. Eye Love You sparked a major fandom for Chae Jong Hyeop.
The Seoul International Drama Awards 2024 will be held on September 25th at KBS Hall. The event will be broadcast live on SBS TV and streamed on the official SDA YouTube channel. A “Purple Carpet” event will precede the ceremony, featuring award winners, presenters, and other celebrities.
