Gi-hun is back in the game, as Netflix reveals the first teaser for the highly anticipated second season of “Squid Game.” Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as the champion and sole survivor from Season 1 in this 30-second clip, which features a series of faceless players in green tracksuits. The last player revealed is his character Seong Gi-hun. The dramatically lit teaser shows each player’s number on the back of their jackets, increasing until it reaches Gi-hun’s number 456.
Season 2 takes place three years after Gi-hun won “Squid Game”, giving up on going to the United States and returning with new determination. He dives back into the mysterious survival game, beginning another life or death trial with new participants gathered to win the €31,8 million prize. Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk previously said that this new season will see Gi-hun seeking revenge, entering the game with a different, more serious character.
Here is the official synopsis for season 2: “Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find those responsible for the game and put an end to their cruel sport. Using his fortune to fund his research, Gi-hun starts with the obvious: looking for the man in the smart suit playing ddakji on the subway. But when his efforts finally bear fruit, the path to dismantling the organization proves far more deadly than he imagined: to end the game, he must enter it again. »
“It’s been almost three years since season 1 received an incredible reception around the world and many unimaginable events took place,” Dong-hyuk said in a letter from Netflix about the season. “I am beyond excited to write this letter to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season. The first day we started filming Season 2, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I can’t believe I’m back in the Squid Game universe.’ It was almost unreal. I wonder what it will be like for you to return to Squid Game after three years as well. »
He continued, “Seong Gi-hun, who swore revenge at the end of season 1, returns and joins the game again. Will he succeed in getting his revenge? The Front Man doesn’t seem to be an easy opponent this time either. The fierce clash between their two worlds will continue until the series finale with season 3, arriving next year. I’m excited to see the seed that was planted in creating a new Squid Game grow and bear fruit until the end of this story. We will do our best to give you an adrenaline rush once again. I hope you’re excited to see what’s in store for you. Thank you, always, and see you soon, everyone. »
