Jeon Do Yeon opened up about the changes in her career after winning Best Actress at the 60th Cannes Film Festival for her role in the 2007 film Secret Sunshine.
On August 4th, Jeon appeared as a guest on Jung Jae Hyung’s YouTube channel “Fairy Jaehyung.” During the episode, she shared her experiences following her Cannes victory.
Jeon recounted, “Cannes was the first film festival I ever attended, and I was clueless. When I got off the plane after receiving the award, director Lee Chang Dong asked, ‘Aren’t you wearing any makeup?’ I was surprised, especially when my mother suddenly appeared in the crowd. I thought, ‘What the heck?’ and had a moment of shock.”
She continued, “I thought, ‘I’ve become an amazing actress. What will I do next?’ But in reality, no scripts came in.” She added, “Before going to Cannes, I had already decided on my next project, ‘My Dear Enemy.’ But people asked, ‘Why are you doing this after Cannes?’ I couldn’t understand why they questioned my choice to work on a low-budget film.”
Jeon also revealed, “After Cannes, I became perceived as a difficult actress rather than a popular one. People assumed there were stacks of scripts on my desk, but that never happened.” She humorously shared, “People were saying that they were writing scripts just for me. But since I hadn’t seen any, I called my manager and asked, ‘Are you filtering the scripts?’”
When Jung Jae Hyung asked if she ever considered going to Hollywood, Jeon surprised everyone by saying, “I did get an offer to audition for ‘Terminator.’ But after ‘Secret Sunshine,’ me in ‘Terminator’? It just didn’t fit. I’m not an action star, nor do I speak English well, so I declined.” She elaborated, “There were offers from the U.S. But I went through a tough time. People called me ‘Queen of Cannes,’ but that title became a burden.”
