BLACKPINK’s Jennie has stirred up quite the controversy online. What started as accusations of indoor smoking has spiraled into a broader debate about her character, with fans expressing their disappointment loudly.
On July 2nd, Jennie released a new episode on her personal YouTube channel titled “A Moment in Capri with Jennie.” The vlog, filmed during her trip to Capri, Italy, included behind-the-scenes footage of Jennie surrounded by staff while getting her hair and makeup done.
In one scene, Jennie appears to smoke an e-cigarette. This moment caught fans off guard, especially given BLACKPINK’s previous statements on various variety shows that “smoking, drinking, and clubbing are forbidden by YG Entertainment.”
While Jennie, born in 1996, is an adult and legally allowed to smoke, the backlash intensified due to her behavior in the video. Regardless of the indoor smoking, Jennie was criticized for blowing smoke in the faces of staff members who were close by, doing her makeup. This act has led to accusations of poor character and disrespect.
The disappointment among fans is palpable. One netizen even posted a screenshot of the request she sent, stating, “I reported Jennie’s indoor smoking to the Italian embassy. I urge the South Korean embassy in Italy to request a thorough investigation and strict action from the Italian authorities regarding BLACKPINK Jennie’s indoor smoking incident.”
Comments from the public include, “Smoking is a personal choice, but blowing smoke in a staff member’s face is shocking,” “The idea of smoking indoors is hard to understand,” “This is a basic manners issue,” “Staff are people too, not NPCs,” and “You can see her character through actions like this. If she cared about others, she wouldn’t do this.”
Meanwhile, Jennie continues her contract with YG Entertainment and BLACKPINK while recently establishing her own agency, Odd Atelier.
