Red Velvet’s Joy has publicly criticized her agency, SM Entertainment, sparking a heated debate among fans.
On the 24th at 6 PM KST, Red Velvet released their ninth mini-album, Cosmic. The music video for the title track “Cosmic” was also scheduled for release at the same time but was delayed. An announcement on Red Velvet’s official social media account stated, “The release of the music video has been delayed due to additional post-production work to improve its quality.” The video was eventually released after a considerable delay.
During an interaction with fans after the music video release, Joy responded to a fan’s request for a reaction to the video by saying, “They didn’t listen to any of our opinions and just told us to wait. We watched the video and saw that none of our requested changes were made. I should probably stay quiet now.”
This comment, implying that SM Entertainment had ignored her input on the music video, has stirred significant controversy. Fans are split in their reactions. Some criticized SM, saying, “There was no consideration for the artist,” and “Did they completely ignore Joy’s opinions?” Others, however, felt that Joy’s public criticism was inappropriate, with comments like, “Is she asking us to join her in bashing them publicly? That’s immature,” and “She seems to lack consideration for the staff.”
Red Velvet is currently promoting the title track “Cosmic” from their newly released mini-album. The mixed reactions to Joy’s comments continue to fuel discussions online.
